Climate-adaptive renovation of Kruidenbuurt

In the Tilburg 2040 Environmental Vision, climate adaptation is an issue that is addressed at every level within the municipality, from strategy development to implementation and management. The municipal authorities aim to tackle the components of water, sewering, green, road, and spatial development in an inter-connected manner. This working method is essential in order for Tilburg to achieve the desired goal without any major additional investments: a safe and healthy city, with room for greenery and water.

Tilburg is taking bold action; this means conducting pilots and continuing to learn. Many small changes together create impetus. In this context, climate adaptation must be taken into account in the design of the Kruidenbuurt renovation (visible blue and green elements in the neighbourhood). In addition to climate-adaptive renovation, communication with residents also plays a key part.

This project does not involve doing more, but rather doing things differently. This could include, for example, the collection of rainwater from rooftops and/or the pavement, in order to retain as much water as possible in the vicinity of the Kruidenbuurt neighbourhood. This involves several millimetres of water storage. A combination with appropriate vegetation could ensure an optimum ecological value.

Results

The results of the design process have been set out in the Design Report (NL) (PDF, 18 MB) regarding the Kruidenbuurt. The integrated design has been developed from a climate adaptation perspective. Adding “separate” climate-adaptive components to a design is virtually impossible. The project will be implemented in mid-2017.
