Collaborating on a climate-friendly Amsterdam

The municipality of Amsterdam is writing a new structural vision for the spatial development of the city running up to 2040. Within the framework of reflection on this subject, the Amsterdam Environmental Centre has initiated the “Collaborating on a climate-friendly city” study. This study focused on the question of how we can achieve a climate-friendly city; a city that releases no greenhouse gases and that is prepared for the effects of climate change.

Results

In the study, special attention was given to current residential districts. There is still considerable profit to be won here in the area of energy conservation. We must be inventive in seeking opportunities for using sustainable energy and the space that is necessary to counterbalance the effects of climate change. A climate-friendly transformation of the existing residential districts is one of the main spatial challenges facing the city.

In design studios specially created for this purpose, experts and residents sketched out their ideas for the compact and liveable district of the future that also takes into account the changing climate. De Baarsjes, the most densely populated and most compactly built district of Amsterdam, served as the model for the studios. The conclusions drawn from this study have been included in this brochure and supplemented with appealing showcase projects, many from Amsterdam itself. The brochure offers inspiration to people that are involved in the development of Amsterdam as a more sustainable city.
