Around the Urban Island

The municipality of Utrecht has launched different projects focused on the greening of the edges of the area lying between the Amsterdam-Rijn Canal and the Merwede Canal. Out of these different projects, an umbrella project was created: “Around the Urban Island” (Rondje Stadseiland). The goal of this umbrella project is to create a continuous green route along the length of the canals.

Spatial adaptation is a central point of focus in this effort. An improved green-blue structure, green roofs, disconnecting rainwater drainage, and rainwater storage are all measures that should make the area climate change adaptive. The ambition is to make connections with the districts that lie within and around the area. Towards this end, the municipality has organised many sessions with residents and users in the area.

Together with partners, the municipality has submitted an application to the European Horizon2020 programme under the theme of Nature Based Solutions. Nature Based Solutions involve smart combinations of green and blue (vegetation and water) measures in the city, for example, combining natural areas with functions such as rainwater storage, health, and recreation.

The municipality will now carry out this project. European funds will enable a more comprehensive approach. In the autumn of 2016, it will become clear whether the application has been successful.
