Water Gate Laarbeek

The municipality of Laarbeek intends to present itself as the “Water Gate to the Peel Region”, thus making its connection with water visible and tangible to residents.

Results

During the pilot project, two principles for adding regional peak water storage have been examined:

  • Natural water courses
Widening the water courses with wetlands, whether with room for natural meandering or not.
  • Inundation landscape
Focus on one or more inundation landscapes, in which a combination of wide ditches and lower-lying fields can temporarily accommodate high water levels.

During the pilot project, the inundation landscape arose as the principle that best ties in with the ambitions of the “Water Gate to the Peel”.
