Bodegraven - Woerden Window

The Bodegraven-Woerden window is the only spatial corridor of a reasonable size between the large open spaces in the northern and the southern parts of the Green Heart in the Randstad conurbation. In policy terms (Nota Ruimte - Spatial Planning Memorandum), considerable emphasis is placed on the importance of keeping this corridor open. For this reason, the Window is one of the icon projects of the Green Heart. The open character of the Window is not something that will remain unthreatened without being consciously protected. Responding properly to the water challenges can contribute to maintaining its open character.

Results

After initial meetings with various parties, four distinctive models were studied with input from residents and owners concerning both the Window’s amenity value and the development of the water, Nature, recreation, and farming functions. The design framework includes an implementation agenda.

In workshops with representatives of all public parties, a collective image of the openness and quality of the Window has been developed. This process generated the document “Inspiration for realisation”. Together with the implementation agenda, this document was adopted by the municipalities and provinces involved. Rather than replacing the many plans, visions, and policy documents for the area, the report serves as an umbrella under which all spatial planning plans are given a place, and as a point of departure for the development and realisation of plans.
