Climate-friendly schoolyard for Jenaplein primary school

The Jenaplein primary school in Zwolle has realised a new schoolyard with lots of greenery. Teachers, pupils, and the school board collectively wished to realise a natural schoolyard. Grants from the Drents Overijsselse Delta district water board and several other parties have helped them to achieve this goal.

The result is a playground in the back schoolyard in which children can play, horse around and learn: it features tree trunks to climb, a water playground to play with water and mud, and a Robinia wood amphitheatre for outdoor classes. Furthermore, the schoolyard features a water pump whose reservoir is filled with rainwater.

An added bonus is that the greening of the schoolyard also significantly helps to reduce heat stress and sewer overloads during severe downpours. Furthermore, children become aware of periods of drought: no rain for a while means that the reservoir is not replenished. For these reasons, the Drents Overijsselse Delta district water board has provided a substantial grant to help realise this project.
