The Climate Campus connects parties in the IJssel-Vecht delta testing ground region

The Climate Campus collaborative connects climate adaptation communities in and around the IJssel-Vecht delta with knowledge clusters and international networks in the field of adaptation. The initiators thus aim to give impetus to the implementation of climate adaptation efforts. The point of departure is to interrelate such efforts with other societal issues such as energy, food, and public health. The Climate Campus is promoting all climate adaptation projects and programmes in the IJssel-Vecht delta, and fosters innovations, start-ups, model projects, studies, and training courses focused on climate adaptation from a broad-based transition perspective.

Climate adaptation demonstration delta

Within the framework of the Climate Campus, more than 40 parties in and around the IJssel-Vecht delta have joined forces. A foundation has been set up to coordinate the efforts. The formation of the Climate Campus was dictated by the need to adapt the delta to the changing climate. Slowly but surely, the impact of climate change is becoming apparent, both in the Netherlands and beyond. The foundation aims to promote climate adaptation-related innovation and implementation efforts, and thus reinforce and expedite solutions to societal issues. The efforts involve initiatives at various scale levels, from regional projects to citizens initiatives. Furthermore, the Climate Campus thus aims to show how the region is developing integrated, climate-adaptive solutions, and to serve as a climate adaptation demonstration delta (“demo delta”).

The Climate Campus as a regional liaison centre

First and foremost, the Climate Campus organisation focuses on liaising between public, private, and civic society organisations in the IJssel-Vecht delta testing ground region, and in adjacent regions wherever such is possible and desirable. To this end, network meetings are organised to engage all the partners in a dialogue. Such meetings range from workshops to large-scale gatherings. A two-weekly newsletter turns the spotlight onto the Climate Campus partners and initiatives.

Lessons to be learned

  • When setting up a network such as the Climate Campus, a key prerequisite is clarity regarding the goal to be achieved by the collaboration, and ensuring that the partners know where to find specific expertise among each other. To this end, a digital platform is being set up.

  • The diversity of interests among the Climate Campus partners hampers the immediate facilitation of requirements. For that reason, partners are brought together through working sessions and introductory meetings focused on a range of issues.

  • A broad-based network facilitates identification of the inter-connection between various aspects of climate change and other societal issues.
